Neptune grass deposit - Ramatuelle

Posidonia oceanica , also called Neptune grass , is not a seaweed or algae, but a seagrass : a flowering plant with roots, stems and leaves that only occurs in the Mediterranean Sea .

It grows in underwater meadows , which are essential for the ecosystem: they provide oxygen production, stabilize the seabed and form a nursery for fish and marine life.

In storms, wind, or waves, the leaves of Posidonia tear off the plant. They wash up on the beach, often forming dark, thick carpets .

Beaches like Bonne Terrasse and Adalicia are located in natural, pristine bays , where Posidonia meadows grow close to the shore . These beaches are not mechanically cleaned to protect the ecosystem .
