Le Normandwijk était au début des années trente (voir photo) un nouveau lotissement clairement orienté vers le tourisme, notamment promu par l'architecte de renom de l'époque, Vereecke, qui devait devenir une extension du quartier de la digue. On s'est inspiré du style architectural normand pour construire un quartier avec des villas individuelles dans la verdure. C'est en réalité une application ultérieure de la pensée du quartier-jardin qui avait déjà été mise en œuvre à Westende-Bad. À l'époque, c'était aussi une réaction claire contre le caractère plus urbanisé des bâtiments sur la digue.
