Le Kloveniersburgwal a été creusé à la fin du 15e siècle, allant de la porte Saint-Antoine (aujourd'hui la Waag sur le Nieuwmarkt) vers le sud, où il débouchait sur l'Amstel. À côté du canal se trouvait le mur de la ville. Après le creusement du Nieuwe Gracht (l'actuel Oudeschans) et la construction de nouvelles murailles, le Kloveniersburgwal a perdu sa fonction de fosse défensive. L'ancien mur de la ville a été démoli et des maisons ont été construites. Vous pouvez encore y voir de nombreux exemples magnifiques autour de l'église du Sud.
