Il castello di Ocre sorge sul monte Circolo a 933 m s.l.m. nel comune di Ocre, in provincia dell'Aquila, sul ciglio della dolina che si apre sopra l'abitato di Fossa.
La prima fonte ad attestare l'esistenza del castello di Ocre è il Catalogus baronum che menziona Todino di Collimento, discendente dei Conti dei Marsi, come suo feudatario; pochi anni più tardi una bolla di Papa Alessandro III del 1178 lo cita tra i possedimenti della Diocesi di Forcona. Nel 1254 venne menzionato col nome di Cassari Castro tra quelli salvati dalla distruzione decisa per tutti i castelli della zona per favorire la fondazione della città dell'Aquila perché di proprietà del gran cancelliere Gualtiero di Ocre, ultimo erede dei signori di Albe che possedevano il feudo sin dalla conquista normanna.
