Im Jahr 1785 wurde ein 7 Kilometer langer Deich entlang der Schelde zwischen Eke und Heurne angelegt. Der Deich schützte im Westen den Dorfkern von Zingem vor den jährlichen Überschwemmungen der Schelde. Auf der topographischen Karte aus dem Jahr 1873 ist die Schelde noch nicht begradigt, und man kann die Überschwemmungsgebiete der Schelde leicht an der grünen Farbe erkennen.
