Der Palazzo del Te ist ein isoliert stehendes viereckiges Gebäude. Es bricht einige Regeln der klassischen Renaissancearchitektur, scheint aber gleichzeitig den Grundregeln zu entsprechen, wie sie durch Leon Battista Albertis De Re Aedificatoria ein Jahrhundert zuvor festgelegt wurden.
Federico II. Gonzaga, Markgraf von Mantua, beschloss 1524 die Errichtung eines Lustschlosses oder Villa Suburbana. Der vorgesehene Standort befand sich bei den gräflichen Stallungen auf der Isola del Teieto , am Rand der Sümpfe außerhalb der Stadtmauern Mantuas.
