The Briek Schotteplein is a square located in Belgian Desselgem, a district of the West Flanders city of Waregem.
The square - named after the two-time world champion cyclist Briek Schotte since 2005 - is located at the corner of Liebaardstraat and Meierie. It was established on the site of the demolished inn De Melkerij and bears an official nameplate from the city of Waregem. On the facade of the adjacent house hangs a photo of Schotte taken by Stephan Vanfleteren.
On the square, there are two artworks. The first Iron Briek is by Johnny Behaeghe and refers to the flax region. The second is a bronze bust of Yvan Behaeghe. A bench and informational boards complete the square.
Although Schotte was not born in Desselgem, he attended school there, learned to ride a bike, and raced in his first competition there. It is also in this village that the annual Grote Prijs Briek Schotte cycling event has been organized since 1941. Because of Briek Schotte, Desselgem was the Village of the Ronde van Vlaanderen.[1]
