On this walking route, you will discover the cozy center of Wervik, a border town along the Leie since 1713. In the historic city center, you can recognize the Roman street pattern of yesteryear. Be impressed by the late medieval Saint Medardus Church, with its cathedral-like features, a silent witness to the thriving cloth industry that brought wealth to Wervik. The Tobacco Town often had to endure a lot due to numerous border and religious conflicts throughout the centuries. After the destruction of World War I, Wervik underwent a true transformation with striking examples of post-war architecture in modernist and neo-styles. Today, the streetscape is adorned with visual art from renowned artists. And just near the city center, you will find surprisingly much green with the renewed banks of the Leie and the recreational island De Balokken.
