Plaza Canal de Ponce - Cadiz - Andalusia

The Plaza del Canal de Ponce is located between the Porta de La Caleta and the Baluarte de los Mártires.

Francisco Ponce Cordones is the discoverer through his historical research of the Bahía-La Caleta canal , which divided what is now the center of Cadiz into two islands in Phoenician times.

The Phoenicians founded Gadir (year 1104 BC) on what was then two islands, Erytheia and Kotinoussa , separated by a canal connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the bay. Over time, the river bed was frightened until it disappeared due to the Guadalete River sediments and human intervention, forming the current appearance of the city. At La Caleta, at low tide, you can see the reef on the seabed, separated by a sandy channel that connected the Atlantic to the bay.
