The Schermer was drained in 1635 with the help of 52 thatched mills. The mills ground the water from the inner basin in three stages to the ring canal of the Schermer and were therefore also called ring mills.
Because wind drainage became too expensive in the early years of the 20th century, the Schermerpolder switched to drainage with electric pumping stations in 1929. The mills lost their function and were demolished on a large scale. Of the 12 remaining mills, three form the mill corridor at Schermerhorn. A mill is a number of cooperating polder mills for draining and keeping a polder dry. Due to the maximum head of approximately 1.50 metres per mill wheel, it was necessary for the water to be raised in 'steps' in deeper polders.
