On this bike tour, you will learn about the versatility of the land of Axel. This area has a special history. The State and Spanish lines from the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648) are still clearly visible there. By flooding large areas, the States (rebels of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands against Spanish rule) were able to stop the advance of the Spanish troops. The warring parties constructed fortifications, forts, and other defenses, often connected by long linear dikes. These lines of defense are still visible in the landscape. Street names like Liniedijk and Fortdijk remind us of a long struggle. For kilometers, you can enjoy wide views and long rows of trees. This is also a bike tour over twin rivers, meadows, and forests. Thus, you pass through the nature reserve Groot Eiland.
