La casa di vacanza è stata costruita nel 1937 per ƒ 1763 dall'appaltatore W. van der Geest su progetto dell'architetto Tjeerd Venstra su incarico di J.D. de Jong Lzn. di Leeuwarden.
Venstra è anche l'architetto, tra l'altro, della villa Zonneheuvel a Dokkum e della casa di vacanza Canidunum ad Ameland. Si è lasciato ispirare nel suo lavoro dall'espressionismo della Scuola di Amsterdam. Nell'ideare la Horst, ha sfruttato la posizione naturale nelle dune. In quest'opera si possono trovare elementi dello stile delle case di campagna inglesi. Il progetto è asimmetrico, le forme circolari sono interrotte da motivi rettangolari. Il tetto in paglia era all'epoca una prescrizione del proprietario dell'isola di Schiermonnikoog, il conte tedesco Georg Ernst August von Bernstorff.
