Die Früchte dieses Baumes sind, du ahnst es schon, kleine essbare, dunkelrote oder schwarze süße Kirschen. Diese Art ist der Vorfahre aller bekannten Kirschsorten und wird beim Veredeln weiterhin als Unterlage verwendet. In der Wildnis wird sie immer seltener, war jedoch früher häufig an Waldrändern anzutreffen. Viele alte Bäume wurden wegen ihres Holzwertes gefällt. Das Holz lässt sich ausgezeichnet polieren und ist nur für stilvolle Möbel bestimmt. Aus jungen Zweigen mit ihrer schönen glänzenden Rinde wurden günstige Pfeifenstöcke hergestellt. Im Frühling sind die Bäume mit Kirschblüten überladen. Aus jedem Knospe erscheinen einige Blätter und jedes Mal 4 weiße Blüten.
