Die Kieler Straßenbahn wurde am 8. Juli 1881 als Pferdebahn mit einer Spurweite von 1100 mm eröffnet. Die Spurweite wurde bis zum Betriebsende 1985 beibehalten, sie ging auf eine Umrechnung der britischen Spur 3 Fuß 6 Zoll in metrische Maße zurück und wurde in Deutschland nur noch bei den Straßenbahnen in Lübeck und Braunschweig verwendet. Die Umstellung auf elektrischen Betrieb erfolgte im Jahre 1896. Betreiber der Bahn war zu diesem Zeitpunkt die Allgemeine Lokalbahn- und Kraftwerke AG . Ab dem Jahr 1942 wurde die Bahn bis zu ihrer Einstellung am 4. Mai 1985 durch die Kieler Verkehrs-AG betrieben.
Die erste Linie führte von Rondeel über Sophienblatt und den damaligen Bahnhof auf einem Rundkurs über Wall, Prinzengarten, Markt und Holstenstraße wieder zum Rondeel zurück. Ab 30. August wurde der Betrieb auf der Strecke Börse – Seebadeanstalt Düsternbrook aufgenommen.
