Arkansas [ˈɑɹkənsɔː] ist einer der südlichen Bundesstaaten der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika mit 2.966.369 Einwohnern .
Die Beinamen Arkansas’ sind The Natural State und Land of Opportunity . Die Hauptstadt ist Little Rock. Der Name Arkansas rührt von der französischen Aussprache eines Wortes der Quapaw her, das sinngemäß „Land der flussabwärts lebenden Menschen“ bedeutet. Die Aussprache wurde 1881 durch einen Beschluss des Bundesstaats amtlich – angelehnt an die Aussprache französischer bzw. italienischer Einwanderer – festgelegt.
Der Mississippi River formte im Laufe der Zeit die östliche Grenze von Arkansas, während zwischen Clay County und Greene County der St. Francis River die westlichen Gebiete prägte. Vielerorts mäandert der Mississippi heute abseits seines ursprünglichen Flussbetts.
