Cistercian Abbey of Bayonne

The Cistercian Abbey of Bayonne was a monastery of Cistercian nuns from 1166 to 1790, first located in Mouguerre and later in Bayonne, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department of France.

The Benedictine monastery of Cagnotte founded a priory in 1166 southeast of Bayonne in Mouguerre, which was populated by Cistercian nuns in 1245 and elevated to an abbey in 1268. The name of the monastery varies between Saint-Etienne de Rive-Adour, Saint-Bernard, Saint-Bernard de Lasteyron, Lasteron, Esteyron or Steyron, Betbezé, or also Notre-Dame. The nuns later moved to the city of Bayonne, where the abbey was dissolved in 1790 due to the French Revolution. The last abbess was Suzanne de Membrède. Today, the street names Chemin de Saint-Bernard and Chemin des Cisterciennes in Bayonne remind us of the former monastery. The archaeological investigation conducted in 2008 discovered remnants of Gothic buildings. In Mouguerre, however, no traces seem to be present.
