La iglesia fue fundada en el siglo XIII. Los tres niveles inferiores de la torre son de toba. En el siglo XIII, la torre fue elevada y la iglesia se convirtió en una iglesia de tres naves con estrechas ventanas de arco apuntado. En el siglo XIV, la iglesia románico-gótica se transformó en una iglesia de cruz mediante ampliaciones. Los transeptos son más grandes que una de las naves. La nave central tiene una bóveda de cúpula. En el techo hay murales. El órgano de 1788 fue hecho por Lambertus van Dam. En la torre de la iglesia cuelga una campana que fue fundida en 1662 por Jurrien Balthasar. En la campana aparece, entre otros, el escudo de Aernt van Hillama, miembro de una familia prominente que en ese entonces habitaba el castillo de Hillama.
