Meldert

Meldert is a village in the Belgian province of Limburg and a part of the municipality of Lummen. Meldert borders Zelem, Deurne, Schaffen, Laren, Lummen, and Linkhout.
The name Meldert partially derives from Germanic and partially from Latin. Meldert refers to the word melde + the suffix aarde. Thus, Meldert could mean melde-field. To grind sounded in Old German as mellen. Erd or ert means earth, place, or field. Meldert would then mean: place where a mill stands. In the regional language, the miller is called the maalder or the mulder. The "u" sounds in many places like a dull "e". The people add a "d" or "t" to some words for euphony. The word mulder also gets a "t" added, and muldert then simply means at the miller or with the mulder. This last explanation corresponds with the findings that have been discovered here. Foundations of a very old watermill on the Zwarte Beek have been found not far from the village center. Thus, the meaning of Meldert would be: at the miller, or as he is called in the regional language, at the muldert.
