The simple park, originally laid out at the end of the 18th century , was expanded several times from 1854 onwards. The reason for the expansion was the cholera epidemic that hit Cádiz at the time. They wanted to provide work for all people who were in need and had to get work .
One of the main spots in the park is La Gruta , a lake with a waterfall where several species of birds coexist.
The park contains some interesting plant species of different origins, which turn it into a real botanical garden . You can count over 100 different species of trees and shrubs, many of which are species not found in other parks or gardens in the city.
It houses a series of small monuments , including those in honor of José Celestino Mutis and José María Permán, as well as the famous Fountain of the Umbrella Children.
