Como numerosos establecimientos de renombre, la Universidad Diderot escolariza a estudiantes de primer, segundo y tercer ciclo. Sin embargo, es única en el conjunto de las ocho universidades parisinas por su amplia multidisciplinariedad.
Creada el 1 de enero de 1971 con el nombre Universidad París VII, tomó en 1994 el nombre de Denis Diderot como símbolo del apego que este filósofo del Siglo de las Luces tenía a la vocación multidisciplinaria.
