The Apeldoorn Canal runs from the IJssel near Dieren to the IJssel near Hattem. From 1868 to 1961 it had the function of a "lateral canal" parallel to the IJssel. At low and high river levels, the IJssel was very difficult to navigate due to insufficient navigation depth and strong currents respectively. The route via the canal was also very attractive, especially for small ships.
The canal still has a function in the water management of the area. For the water supply, the canal is fed by Veluwe springs and streams. A sprinkler is a stream dug or diverted by humans with wells dug in such a way that pressurized groundwater is brought to the surface. Sprengebeken were mainly used to drive water mills and/or for water for the laundries.
