El Canal de Apeldoorn va desde el IJssel en Dieren hasta el IJssel en Hattem. Tuvo la función de "canal lateral" paralelo al IJssel desde 1868 hasta 1961. Con niveles bajos y altos del río, el IJssel era muy difícil de navegar debido a la falta de profundidad navegable y a las fuertes corrientes. La ruta a través del canal era, especialmente para barcos pequeños, muy atractiva.
El canal aún tiene una función en la gestión del agua de la zona. Para el suministro de agua, el canal es alimentado por manantiales y arroyos de Veluwe. Un manantial o "sprengebreek" es un arroyo excavado o desviado por humanos con fuentes excavadas de tal manera que se lleva agua subterránea a presión a la superficie. Los arroyos de sprenge se utilizaban principalmente para accionar molinos de agua y/o para el agua de las lavanderías.
