El Mombeek forma la serpenteante frontera entre Alken y Hasselt. En el punto más profundo del valle, el antiguo Mombeek fluye paralelo a su gran hermano. El carácter más húmedo de este valle lo hizo históricamente de difícil acceso. No se podían construir casas allí y la agricultura moderna también dejó el valle tal como estaba. Hoy es un oasis azul verde en el fértil paisaje agrícola y de praderas de Haspengouw.
