La friche de Johannismühle est située dans la zone de conservation du paysage LSG-00567.01 dans le parc naturel de la forêt du Haut-Palatinat, sur la route nationale 2159, à environ un kilomètre à l’est de Dietersdorf. Le site est situé sur le Lohbach, qui se jette dans l’Ascha à environ un kilomètre plus à l’ouest, près de Dietersdorf. À environ 1,3 km au nord-est se trouve la frontière avec la République tchèque.
Dans les années 1810, le cadastre bavarois original ne montre qu’un seul pont sur le Lohbach à Johannismühle. Dans les travaux cartographiques, un bâtiment sans nom est enregistré pour la première fois vers 1890. Le nom de Johannes-Mühle apparaît sur les cartes de l’époque du national-socialisme en 1936. À ce moment-là, l’étang du moulin d’environ 1000 m², qui a été créé à environ 100 m au sud du moulin, était déjà cartographié.
