The Glashütte Wisthoff is a glassworks that has been located in the Ruhr valley in the Essen district of Horst since 1971. It was founded in Steele. As a current part of the Gerresheimer Group, it is considered one of the probably oldest industrial companies in the area of today's city of Essen.
On February 17, 1723, Friedrich Wilhelm I granted permission for the establishment of the Royal Privileged Glass Manufacture in the then rural municipality of Königssteele, and it was privileged in 1727. Since coal was already being mined in the Ruhr valley at that time, the glassworks was one of the first in Western Germany to be able to produce using this fuel. This, along with the proximity to the Ruhr, were counted among the advantages of the location in the otherwise structurally weak Steele.
