Pfaffenheim

The village, whose origins date back to Roman and even Celtic times, owes its name "Papanheim" to the numerous estates belonging to convents and monasteries. Current research suggests an earlier presence on the site, with the "priests" possibly being "druids".

The wine trade must have flourished: indeed, many of the "patrician" houses date back to the Renaissance period, with magnificent towers housing ashlar staircases. The village also boasted three "châteaux", or fortified houses, of which unfortunately no trace remains.

Where there's wealth, there's greed, and Pfaffenheim paid dearly for this prodigality of nature, as the village was destroyed three times: in 1338 by the armies of the Emperor of Bavaria fighting with the bishopric of Strasbourg, in 1444 by the Armagnacs, and in 1525 during the Peasants' War.
