Àustria , oficialment la República d'Àustria , és un estat sense litoral a l'Europa central. Limita amb Alemanya i la República Txeca al nord, amb Eslovàquia i Hongria a l'est, amb Eslovènia i Itàlia al sud, i amb Suïssa i Liechtenstein a l'oest. La seva capital és Viena.
Els orígens de l'Àustria germanòfona es remunten al segle IX, quan els territoris de l'Alta i Baixa Àustria foren cada cop més poblats. El nom alemany Ostarrichi és documentat per primer cop en un document oficial del 996 i té les seves arrels als primer mil·lenni aC. Des de llavors la paraula s'ha desenvolupat fins a Österreich.
