Tothom pot pensar en un primer moment que la construcció dels salts d’aigua es va fer per aprofitar-ne la força en el moment del salt per moure unes turbines i generar electricitat, un recurs per altra banda força habitual. Però en aquest cas, els Nou Salts tenien una altra finalitat, que era frenar la velocitat de l’aigua en zones on hi havia un fort desnivell. No va ser fins a finals del segle XX que es van aprofitar aquests desnivells per produir energia elèctrica mitjançant la força de l’aigua. Actualment l’entorn dels Nou Salts i de la minicentral creen un paratge i entorn natural molt agradable.
