El castell de Montsegur se situa a la població homònima al País de Foix, departament francès de l'Arieja, al sud-oest de Carcassona, a Occitània, en un penyal , de 1.207 metres d'altitud. El castell domina tota la vall del riu Lasset i és de difícil accés, fet que en facilitava la defensa; només s'hi pot accedir per un camí de bast, costerut, estret i sinuós. L'existència d'un castrum, o poble fortificat, fora dels murs del castell, està documentada abans de la construcció de l'actual castell. Montsegur va servir de refugi als càtars, dins el context de la croada albigesa, fins que, el maig de 1243, l'exèrcit croat del papa i la monarquia francesa van prendre la muntanya i van extingir el darrer nucli de resistència d'aquesta confessió cristiana.
