La Tate Britain forma part de la xarxa de galeries Tate a Gran Bretanya, juntament amb la Tate Modern, la Tate Liverpool i la Tate St Ives. Va ser el primer d'aquests museus que es va establir i va obrir el 1897. Allotja una important col·lecció d'obres de J.M.W. Turner.
Es localitza a la seu original de Tate a Millbank, en el lloc en el qual va estar la Presó de Millbank. La part frontal de l'edifici va ser dissenyada per Sydney R. J. Smith amb un pòrtic clàssic i una cúpula. La construcció va començar el 1893. La galeria va obrir el 21 de juliol de 1897 amb el nom de Galeria Nacional d'Art Britànic, però va passar a ser coneguda com a Galeria Tate, en honor al seu fundador sir Henry Tate. Hi ha hagut moltes ampliacions des de la seva fundació. La galeria central d'escultures va ser dissenyada per John Russell Pope.
