Altis nom provinent de ἄλσος «bosc», «bosc sagrat», «recinte sagrat» es trobava en el Peloponnès, més exactament en una petita plana de la regió d'Êlide, a la riba dreta del riu Alfeu, a prop de la ciutat de Pirgos, a uns 18 quilòmetres del Mar Jònic. En un principi, va ser un bosc sagrat on creixien magnífics arbres.
El bosc sembla haver estat habitat de manera contínua des de principis del III mil·lenni aC, encara que està atestat arqueològicament entre els segles X i IX aC. En ell es va edificar, amagat en el centre, l'Altar de Zeus d'Olímpia. A aquest monument el va succeir un temple perípter d'ordre dòric, construït en honor de la deessa Hera. Olímpia va ser edificada en aquest lloc.
