Das Spalentor ist ein ehemaliges Stadttor der Stadt Basel und früherer Bestandteil der Basler Stadtmauer. Es ist eines der drei Stadttore, welche heute noch existieren, und steht unter Denkmalschutz. Es gilt als eines der schönsten Stadttore in der Schweiz.
Im Oktober 1356 verwandelte ein grosses Erdbeben das alte Basel in einen Trümmerhaufen. Die damaligen Basler gingen daran, ihre Behausungen neu aufzubauen. Sie umgaben ihre neuerstandene Rheinstadt gleich mit einem hohen Mauergürtel und einem Wassergraben davor, wobei sie die Vorstädte in den Mauerring miteinbezogen. Die Ringmauer verstärkten sie mit über 40 Wehrtürmen; 7 davon waren Tortürme und das Spalentor ist einer davon. Das Spalentor blickt hinaus auf den grossen Anmarschweg, der von Frankreich her zur Rheinstadt führte, und schützte die Spalenvorstadt hinter dem Tor.
