Die Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin wurde im Sommer 1809 vom preußischen König Friedrich Wilhelm III. als Universität zu Berlin gegründet und nahm im Herbst 1810 den Lehrbetrieb auf. Die größte und älteste Hochschule in Berlin ist seit 1949 nach den preußischen Wissenschaftlern Wilhelm und Alexander von Humboldt benannt. Sie hat ihren Hauptsitz im Palais des Prinzen Heinrich an der Straße Unter den Linden 6 im Ortsteil Mitte.
Die HU Berlin gehört zu den 20 größten Hochschulen in Deutschland und den renommiertesten Universitäten weltweit. Am 19. Juli 2019 wurde sie im Rahmen der Exzellenzstrategie als Einrichtung der Berlin University Alliance von Bund und Ländern in die zweite Förderlinie aufgenommen, nachdem sie bereits 2012 im Rahmen der Exzellenzinitiative zur „Exzellenzuniversität“ ernannt worden war.
