Bautzen, obersorbisch Budyšin , bis 3. Juni 1868 offiziell Budissin , ist eine Große Kreisstadt in Ostsachsen. Die Stadt liegt an der Spree und ist Kreissitz des nach ihr benannten Landkreises Bautzen. Mit rund 40.000 Einwohnern ist Bautzen zugleich die größte Stadt des Kreises und die zweitgrößte der Oberlausitz sowie deren historische Hauptstadt.
Obwohl in der Stadt im sorbischen Siedlungsgebiet selbst nur eine sorbische Minderheit von 5 bis 10 % der Bevölkerung wohnt, ist sie das politische und kulturelle Zentrum der Sorben.
