Die Universität zu Köln ist eine Hochschule in Köln mit dem klassischen Fächerspektrum einer Volluniversität. Die 1388 unter dem lateinischen Namen Universitas Studii Coloniensis gegründete „Alte Universität zu Köln“ zählte zu den ältesten Universitäten in Europa. Sie wurde allerdings 1798 in der Franzosenzeit geschlossen und erst 1919 als „Neue Universität zu Köln“ wiedergegründet. Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg und dem Verlust der Kaiser-Wilhelms-Universität zu Straßburg sollte sie auch deren Tradition fortsetzen und die „deutsche Position am Rhein stärken“.
