Die Schlacht um Berlin war die letzte große Schlacht des Zweiten Weltkrieges in Europa. Sie dauerte vom 16. April bis zum 2. Mai 1945 und hatte die Besetzung Berlins, der Hauptstadt des Deutschen Reiches, durch die Rote Armee der Sowjetunion unter Beteiligung einiger polnischer Einheiten zur Folge. Die Kämpfe forderten Schätzungen zufolge über 170.000 Gefallene und 500.000 verwundete Soldaten sowie den Tod mehrerer zehntausend Zivilisten.
Nach der bereits weitgehend erfolgten Befreiung der von der Wehrmacht besetzten Gebiete Europas bedeutete das Ende der Schlacht, das mit dem Selbstmord von Teilen der politisch verantwortlichen Regierungsschicht des NS-Regimes einherging – in Berlin dem Suizid von Adolf Hitler und Joseph Goebbels – für das Deutsche Reich die vollständige militärische Niederlage.
