Die Salzach ist ein rechter Zufluss des Inns und mit 225 km Länge sein längster und wasserreichster. Sie fließt im Land Salzburg , in Bayern und in Oberösterreich, ist einer der großen Alpenflüsse und entwässert fast die gesamten Hohen Tauern nach Norden.Der antike lateinische Name der Salzach lautete Iuvarus bzw. Ivarus. Der Name kam von der keltischen Flussgottheit Iuvavo, der göttlichen Personifikation der Salzach. Den Namen dieses Gottes hatten die Römer zudem später leicht latinisiert für die römische Stadt Iuvavum übernommen.
