Die Europäische Union ist ein Staatenverbund aus 27 europäischen Ländern. Außerhalb des geographischen Europas umfasst die EU Zypern und einige Überseegebiete. Sie hat insgesamt etwa 450 Millionen Einwohner. Gemessen am Bruttoinlandsprodukt ist der EU-Binnenmarkt der größte gemeinsame Wirtschaftsraum der Erde. Die EU stellt eine eigenständige Rechtspersönlichkeit dar und hat daher Einsichts- und Rederecht bei den Vereinten Nationen.
Die verbreitetsten Sprachen in der EU sind Englisch, Deutsch und Französisch. Im Jahre 2012 wurde die Europäische Union mit dem Friedensnobelpreis ausgezeichnet.
