Brest ist eine französische Hafenstadt in der Bretagne mit 139.926 Einwohnern . Sie gehört zum Département Finistère. Aufgrund ihrer geschützten Lage an der Bucht von Brest , einer tief ins Land ragenden Bucht des Atlantiks, sowie des natürlichen Hafens im Bereich der Mündung des Flüsschens Penfeld ist Brest seit Jahrhunderten ein bedeutender Marinehafen Frankreichs. Noch heute ist Brest, auch „Cité du Ponant“ genannt, Stützpunkt der französischen Atlantikflotte und ein wichtiger Handelshafen.
