Die Solfatara ist ein holozäner Vulkankrater im Stadtgebiet von Pozzuoli, westlich von Neapel . Der Krater hat einen Durchmesser von ca. 770 m und weist an drei Seiten steile Wände auf. Im Süden öffnet sich die Umrandung in Richtung Stadt und auf den Golf von Neapel.
Die Solfatara gehört zur aktiven Vulkanprovinz der Phlegräischen Felder, die aus zahlreichen Eruptionszentren und Calderen besteht, und entstand während eines Ausbruchs vor ca. 4000 Jahren. Möglicherweise ereignete sich eine weitere phreatische Eruption im 12. Jahrhundert .
