Das Dorf wurde erstmals 1242 als Wanzem erwähnt und bedeutet "Siedlung von Wando oder Wanso". Wanssum entwickelte sich am Zusammenfluss der Grote Molenbeek mit der Maas. 1485 wurde es eine selbständige Pfarrei. 1648 wurde es Teil der spanischen Gelder. 1713 gehörte es zu Preußen und 1815 zum Königreich der Niederlande.
