Es befindet sich in der Zentrale des historischen Kraftwerks von Massarelos. Das von der Sociedade de Transportes Colectivos do Porto gegründete Museum wurde im Mai 1992 eingeweiht. Das Ziel ist, eine große Anzahl von Straßenbahn-Fahrzeugen zu erhalten.
Das Straßenbahnmuseum betreibt drei Museumslinien für den regulären Fahrgastbetrieb und eine Touristenlinie. Im Straßenbahnmuseum finden aber auch kulturelle Veranstaltungen statt.
