Die Endrunde der 12. Fußball-Europameisterschaft wurde vom 12. Juni bis zum 4. Juli 2004 in Portugal ausgetragen. Am Turnier nahmen 16 Nationalmannschaften teil, die in 31 Spielen zunächst in Gruppen und danach im K.-o.-System gegeneinander antraten.
Die Nationalmannschaft Griechenlands, die als Außenseiter angereist war, gewann das Turnier nach einem 1:0-Sieg über Portugal im Finale von Lissabon und wurde damit zum ersten Mal Fußball-Europameister. Mit dem Mittelfeldspieler Theodoros Zagorakis stellte Griechenland zudem den besten Spieler des Turniers. Der Vize-Weltmeister von 2002, Deutschland, scheiterte, wie auch vier Jahre zuvor, bereits in der Gruppenphase. Die Schweiz scheiterte ebenso in der Gruppenphase, Österreich bereits in der Qualifikation. Torschützenkönig wurde der Tscheche Milan Baroš.
