Die Schlacht vom Stones River war eine Schlacht des Sezessionskrieges, bei der es um die Vorherrschaft im zentralen Teil von Tennessee ging. Sie dauerte vom 31. Dezember 1862 bis zum 2. Januar 1863.
Befehlshaber der Unionsstreitkräfte war William Starke Rosecrans, der die Cumberland-Armee Ende Oktober von General Don Carlos Buell übernommen hatte. Rosecrans führte etwa 45.000 Soldaten von Nashville in Richtung Süden. In der Nähe von Murfreesboro lagerte die konföderierte Tennessee-Armee unter General Bragg. Am 31. Dezember kam es zur Schlacht, wobei Braggs linker Flügel in aller Frühe die rechte Flanke Rosecrans' unter McCook angriff und diese bis zur Verbindungsstraße von Nashville nach Chattanooga zurückdrängte. Philip Sheridans Division gelang es jedoch nach heftigen Kämpfen, die rechte Unionsfront zu halten.
