A lot of canals were being filled, partly because they lost their function for transport and/or trade, partly because of health reasons. The canals were an open sewer in the previous centuries, a source of many epidemics. By 1500, the water was so polluted that they had to bring water from the river Vecht via the Amstel, in special barges. Especially in wintertime, drinking water was scarce and expensive.
