The term stinsen plant is derived from the Frisian word 'stins', which in turn means 'stone house'. In short: they are plants that grow near stone houses. The Netherlands now has many stone houses, but still little or no Stinsen plants grow near all those houses. That's because these plants used to be a plaything of the nobility; They liked to show off exotic plants from faraway places. So you see them a lot at castles and country estates.
