This bunker formed the command center of the Third Fighter Division of the Luftwaffe and during World War II formed the nerve center of the air defense of the Netherlands, the northern half of Belgium, the Ruhr area and a strip of Germany along the Dutch eastern border. Diogenes had direct contact with the Luftwaffe headquarters in Berlin. The Germans had several such command centers. There were bunkers in Stade near Hamburg, in Grove and in Metz.
