El Castillo de Hohenwerfen es una enorme fortificación situada en un promontorio perteneciente a la montaña Hochkönig, en la ribera del río Salzach, dominando la ciudad de Werfen en Austria.[1] Está datado en el siglo XI.
La primera fortificación fue construida entre 1075 y 1078 durante la controversia de la investidura imperial, por orden del arzobispo Gebhard de Salzburgo como un baluarte estratégico.[2] Gebhard era aliado del papa Gregorio VII y opuesto al rey Rodolfo de Rheinfelden. Había tres grandes castillos para proteger el Arzobispado de Salzburgo de las fuerzas del rey Enrique IV: este de Hohenwerfen, la Fortaleza de Hohensalzburg en Salzburgo y el Castillo de Petersberg en Friesach .
