Este cuartel de caballería es hoy el principal vestigio de un antiguo distrito militar.
Fue construido en 1690 por Vauban en las afueras de la ciudad. Soldados franceses, holandeses y más tarde belgas permanecieron allí con sus caballos hasta que la guarnición fue suprimida en 1865. Los establos podían acomodar a 160 caballos . Esta parte tan particular de la ciudad ha mantenido su aspecto militar gracias a la creación de dos escuelas militares que se establecieron allí hasta la Primera Guerra Mundial.
Más tarde, al mismo tiempo que la casa adosada , se construyeron dormitorios que carecían de comodidades . En 1990 se incluyó en un plan de reformas. Ahora hay diez viviendas sociales en el cuartel de Vauban. El edificio está clasificado como monumento histórico desde 1978.
