Es la residencia oficial del Gran Duque de Luxemburgo, y donde realiza la mayoría de sus obligaciones como cabeza del Estado del Gran Ducado.
El edificio fue en un principio el Ayuntamiento de Luxemburgo desde 1572 hasta 1795, la sede de la prefectura del Département des Forêts en 1795, y después la sede principal del Gobierno de Luxemburgo en 1817.[1]
